I'm realizing that part of the flaw in writing a parallel story is that the twist from one book is already known in the next. Still it was interesting to see what what's happening outside of Captain Caldars group. What is also cool is to see that these two opposing sides see the other as being the villains. We are presented with them both being fairly good. Granted a guild of Assassins and a protagonist who has alluded emotional and moral range stretches the definition of good guys. It is fun to see as both a reader and a hobby writer an author creating a story around and emotionally stunted and morally ambiguous character as Shera. It's looking like books three of Killers & Kings, and of kings and killers will be released at the end of 2018 according to the authors website. I am both excited and sort of sad by the news because I really like the Cradle series that Will Wight he's producing and I think it's the reason for the delay in the third book of both the series. I do not know if it is a Trilogy or not but I'm sort of hoping it is.
There is action and adventure along with some pretty awesome for the lack of better word magic in the world in this book. At same time it does feel a bit slow and does have the feeling of a second book of a trilogy that is more focused on the end of third book then that have the second. I did enjoy last page so the ending wasn't too bad LOL. Still I do prefer his other series particularly the Cradle.
The story is age appropriate for teenagers and above with violence and some emotional scenes.

Of Darkness and Dawn The Elder Empire Shadow Book 2 eBook Will Wight Reviews
I love Will Wight's stories. He's so easy to read, and his stories are so enjoyable that he's become my new guilty pleasure now that Butcher has stopped the Dresden Files. If you haven't read the Traveler's Gate, also by Will Wight - read that. Read that whole series. Just such a great story. That's about all that needs to be said about Will Wight - he's easily accessible and his stories are great. This review is going on all of the books in this series until I read one that's not as good.
Will Wight has become a signifcant author! It's hard to find quality authors in Fantasy and while I love Brandon Sanderson, there is a finite number of books he can write. Will is every bit as good with interesting worlds, characters, and rules in each story set that really make it fascinating. This Elder series is very good and that he has a parallel set in the same world but from a different character's perspective makes it an even better world to invest time into. Nice job, Will Wight
The biggest issue i have with Will Wight is... I now have to wait while he writes the next book in the series. Not just this series...ANY series he writes is worth waiting on. But the especially imaginative and fun part of this particular series, as both an avid and very fast reader, and someone who gets distracted & bored easily and usually is reading several books at once, is that you are able to tread both this book and it's sister title starts same time,. You'll not only have a more enjoyable experiencr, but you'll find yourself able to pace the action and storyline as you wish. I loved being able to bounce from one book to the other, choosing which storyline to follow, allowing myself to stop at climactic tense moments to catch up in he other book worthwhile characters... It was fun! And for those who read as my spouse does, slowly and deliberately, you'll be just as happy taking it one book at a time. Mr. Wight is a master storyteller that has successfully drawn me into his web of fantasy worlds. As a film & television editor i loved being able to pace these Elder novels together at my own speed, and I cannot wait for the movies. But first... I guess I have to wait for the completion of this series! Which I do with great anticipation! The only problem is, I await the next in his other book series as well (Cradle, anyone?). C'mon Will! Your greedy and hungry public awaits ALL of them. We are ready to devour your next offering...
This book, like all others by Will Wight, is amazing! I love the characters and the plot, and the who ambitious idea of two books happening at the SAME time! He weaves these tales together into a literary masterpiece!
That said, I took off one star on these books. The books, starting with "Of Sea and Shadow" and "Of Shadow and Sea", are written to take place during the same time, but from the viewpoints of two different characters. My issue is that in the middle of these two characters interacting with the world, is that in each book takes place at two different "times".
For example, the story of "Of Shadow and Sea" starts with Shera (who is the best character ever) when she is a little girl. The "main" events take place when she is in her mid 20's but then keeps jumping back to when she was a child to highlight parts of the story. This is a GREAT literary technique and really keeps the book fresh. My issue, is that I start to absolutely LOVE the time I am currently reading, then something cliff-hander-y happens and it jumps back to the other time line (kid to adult, or adult to kid). These jumps just keep happening and while I LOVE the story, I feel like there 24 different cliff-hangers in one of these books, then I have to read to other brook for the other main character and then the story jumps around all the time again.
Now, I still LOVED this book. I just wanted to point out that the reason I took off a star for this book is that Will Wight was TOO MUCH of a genius in writing it. I think I would have enjoyed the story better if they stayed in one view point for longer periods throughout the book. I do not mind flashbacks and think they are a great way for your to understand the characters. The problem was it was like a book with three main characters, but you only really like to read one of them, so every time the viewpoint shifted you were left feeling slightly cheated because you aren't reading about your favorite anymore. Then the part you are now reading is your new favorite character before it switches again the who cycle starts over again.
