John Branch is a brilliant-minded aristocrat, bereft of his family’s wealth, ravaged by a terrible and as yet unidentified disease. Susan is a hard-working nurse at the end of her tether.

John’s illness has always baffled doctors, and there are times when she wishes that he would just slip away. But John’s mind is very much alive, and she can’t help but cling onto the dream he will recover.

As pressures mount, Susan resorts to one desperate act after another to keep John alive and manage his pain, all the while haunted by a creeping sense that something isn’t right with her world…

SICK is brimming with atmosphere and suspense, rich with style and psychological insight. This seemingly simple tale of two psyches will take you to the heart of the human condition, and show you just how twisted the relationships with those closest to us can be.

SICK should be Contagious, because I want MORE!

I admit that I found the cover art to be repulsive, but rather than some mindless gore fest, as the image could suggest, SICK, a novella by Christa (Wojo) Wojciechowski, is an intelligent, slow burn of psychological horror writing at its very best.

The reader is introduced to Suze Branch, a devoted and somewhat downtrodden wife, who discovers that there is more to her husband’s chronic illnesses than merely poor health or bad luck. Through her eyes, we learn more about her husband, John, whom she first met while working as doctor’s assistant. Her medical background has become extremely necessary during their ten year marriage as John never seems to fully recover from his various ailments.

The writing, although in first-person (I usually prefer third-person), is outstanding. There is absolutely the right mix of description and dialogue, conflict and resolution. One scene that especially stood out was the introduction of this doomed couple’s home. It made me recall the old gothic estates where Poe or Hawthorne set their works. This is a modern thriller, but the foundations of this story are firmly set in traditional horror.

“Besides the main house and set farther back was a four-car garage, the domain of Old Pete, the Branch’s aging groundskeeper. Next in line was small two-story, all brick with white trim to match the mansion. This was the guesthouse. At the very end of the gravel drive was the old servants’ quarters, identical to the guesthouse, though smaller and not as meticulously kept as the rest of the estate. John said when he was a boy, he called the main house the mother duck. The two small houses were her ducklings. We lived in the ugly duckling.”

These characters and this relationship will haunt me. As a reader, you will find yourself dwelling upon the nature of sickness and how addiction or codependency may motivate a person to self-destruction. It was a fast-paced and enjoyable read.

But that was faint praise--you know when you've come across a book that you really love and you immediately must write a review? That book that you've been downloading eBook after eBook, waiting to discover? Well, SICK was that book for me. I can’t wait to read the second, SICKER, and I look forward to the eventual publication of the third title, SICKEST!

SICK Part I The Sick Series Book 1 eBook Christa Wojciechowski Candace Johnson Reviews

I found the title was so apt - the story is really "sick" - but by "sick" I mean depressing to the nth degree. I wanted to shake Suze throughout - like - dump this freak and get a life. I realized pretty quick that John loved being sick/hurt and thrived on the attention and panic. I knew nothing about the actual condition he had - so all that discussion at the end was useful and really made me sad for anyone having to deal with it.

The writing was so well done - Christa writes so beautifully and "correctly," (liked I learned from the nuns when I was growing up. There were no stones unturned and no let down in the dénouement and ending. It made me feel sad to have it end in such a depressing surprise - quite a shocker.
Sick, a Novella, as the title suggests, is a disturbing book. Suze is a long-suffering wife who cares for her mysteriously ailing husband, John. The reader can only feel sorry for Suze when she says, “I entered the dark cell of our bedroom, a messy den where we were forced to share our matrimonial bedroom with illness and pain.” But the reader also feels sorry for John because he is the one in constant pain, so much so that Suze is forced to steal Demerol for him from the clinic where she works.

With John it’s always something, a bacterial infection, a ruptured spleen, bruises in various stages – black, purple, blue, green, and yellow and more. There is no break in the story from all his troubles, it’s one thing after another and no doctor can figure it out.

But the novel is not just about sickness, its focus is on an exploration of the psychology between two people and how their lives become inter-dependent. John is very ill but he is also manipulative and uses his illness to control Suze, who will do anything to soothe his aches and pains. And there is no end to her grief, “I broke down and wept all the way to the hospital, emotionally replete and beyond self-consciousness.” The more Suze worries, the more control John has over her.

However, things start to unravel when Suze finds a hammer beneath the bed, auto coolant with a broken seal, and a syringe filled with a strange substance. It is at this point that everything comes to a dramatic end. As Suze finally figures things out, John confesses, and gleefully at that, “Yes! Yes. You got it… You’ve finally figured it out.”

But their journey doesn’t end there or does it? Will Suze feel compelled to continue looking after John now that he is maybe even sicker than before? Will we find out in a sequel? Looking forward to it!

Christa Wojciechowski’s prose is compelling and unadorned, and she effortlessly breaths life into her characters. A great suspense-thriller! Highly recommended.
